about

mc enigma is a Plainfield, NJ native. Rapping since 2003, mc enigma has been honing his skills, striving to become one of history's most respected artists. After the riots that took place in the 60s and the Vietnam war, mc enigma was born into Reaganomics and the crack-era. mc enigma's music describes the harsh realities of oppression, imperialism, and pain, but his music also conveys the beauty of the struggle for freedom, justice and equality.

After performing "The Day Hip Hop Died" at NJPAC's Planet Hip Hop and having it critiqued by Sonia Sanchez, mc enigma got serious. This didactic emcee continued performing through the New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut circuits.

Now, his debut album "emagin" is out. emagin opens with Abstrack and Dianetics "Emagination (intro)" that has an echoing Nas sample, "I can do anything my imagination can give me wings." "Royal Flush" and "The Emperor" follow, flexing mc enigma's lyrical dexterity and honesty with his self. "Wonder Years" is tale of the quirky, nerdy adolescent trudging through the gauntlet of peer pressure, while fantasizing of having imaginary relationships with a plethora of voluptuous anime characters, Princess Leah, Elvira, and Psylocke. The end of the track has a re-enactment of an actual failed attempt at mc enigma's high school crush. He hasn't repeated this mistake since…Pick up lines are ineffective. "You Run" is an inquiry of how hyper-masculine hip hop becomes quickly castrated by the fuzz. "Never Look Back" is a gloomy Sean Bell dedication and proclamation of a better tomorrow. The album can be compared to a stroll and conversation with mc enigma. You'll end up talking about music, neocolonialism, Kevin Smith films and Plainfield, NJ.

A decoded message from mc enigma that will self destruct after reading.

"There were two types of negroes, a field negro and a house negro." - El Hajj Malik Shabazz

I'm from the field. I'm here to make music and unite people. My influences range from Dr. Evil from Austin Powers and MC Gusto from CB4 to Nas, Black Thought, Hasan Salaam, Tiye Phoenix and Elzhi. My professor Jim Broderick would always say journalists are here to "comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable." I am a journalist with a mic. If I wasn't writing and making music I'd probably be freelancing with DemocracyNow! or interning for Riz Khan on Al Jazeera. That might be in the plans, but until then, allow me to take you on quest, close your eyes, and "emagin."
